Candy Jones

Candy Jones was a Black American woman who lived in the Montgomery, Alabama area with her husband, Micah Jones, and their sons, Miles and Noah. She met Elliot Landry and his mother around 2006–2007. In 2008, when Elliot was five, Candy began providing regular childcare and became a chosen mother to him. Her household gave Elliot long-term care, advocacy, refuge, and stable housing alongside his mother, Jazmine Landry.

Elliot Landry

Candy provided childcare for Elliot while Jazmine worked. She recognized his hunger crashes, offered food before they became crises, taught him basic signs when expressive speech was difficult, and created quiet spaces where he could regulate.

Candy was listed as Elliot’s secondary emergency contact at school. She participated in school advocacy and responded when he became severely overheated and came close to heatstroke during physical education at age eleven. Noah stayed with Elliot in the nurse’s office; after the school could not reach Jazmine, Candy contacted her and helped bring Elliot home. Her home also remained a refuge when he returned from unsafe family environments or needed rest and support.

Jazmine Landry

Candy supported Jazmine by sharing childcare and advocacy rather than replacing her role as Elliot’s mother. When the Landrys’ apartment became mold-infested and medically unsafe, Candy and Micah’s attached-suite arrangement gave them stable housing near the Jones family.

Community Care and Advocacy

Candy’s support for Elliot combined daily care with practical advocacy. She helped address his communication, sensory, nutritional, school, emergency, and housing needs while treating him as part of her family.

Candy was also listed among the participants in the community response during Elliot’s COVID-19 hospitalization.
